Gym changing room hygiene: getting ready for the January rush.

A new member decides whether a gym is worth keeping long before the direct debit renews. Very often, they decide in the changing room.

January is the busiest month of the year for UK gyms. Data from 1,300 UK clubs found January is 28% busier than December. One of the UK’s largest gym chains also reported its gyms were nearly 40% busier in January 2023 than in the two months before. That surge lands on changing rooms, showers and washrooms that have just come through Christmas. Often, they’ve had reduced hours and a lighter cleaning schedule too.

Why January hits changing rooms hardest

More visits mean more showers, more hair and soap in the drains and more moisture in the air. On top of that, toilets and urinals see more use, all in the same few weeks. Equipment is easy to wipe down between users. Changing rooms, however, are where build-up hides: in traps, grout, ceiling corners and pipework.

Existing members know the site and its quirks. New members don’t, and around 12% of all new gym members join in January, so first impressions count. They’re comparing your site with their previous gym. A smell in the changing room or a shower tray full of standing water makes the wrong impression. It’s the kind that ends a membership early.

Shower drains: the first thing to fail

Hair and soap residue are the main cause of slow and blocked shower drains, and January multiplies both. A blocked shower in the first week of the year means an out-of-order sign and a queue for the rest. It also means a callout that is hard to book.

DRAINZAP breaks down hair, slime and organic build-up in showers and sinks within about two hours. It does this without caustic chemicals that can damage pipework. Start regular treatment in December, and your drains will be free-flowing going into the rush. After that, regular dosing stops the build-up returning.

Mould on grout, ceilings and seals

Winter is condensation season. Cold surfaces, warm showers and limited ventilation make changing rooms ideal for mould. It shows up particularly on grout lines, silicone seals and ceiling corners above the showers. New members notice it straight away.

Bleach-based sprays often whiten the surface without dealing with what is underneath. That’s why mould tends to come back. We explain this in more detail in why does mould keep coming back?

MOULDZAP is a chlorine-free, pH-neutral mould remover for bathroom surfaces, walls and ceilings. You leave it for 15 minutes and wipe it off, with no scrubbing. It doesn’t bleach or fade surfaces either. As a result, it’s practical to treat a whole changing room in a single closed session.

Limescale on showerheads, taps and fittings

In hard water areas, heavy shower use leaves limescale on showerheads, taps, glass and tiles. Scaled-up showerheads lose pressure, and scaled fittings look dirty even when they are clean.

SCALEZAP 360 Foam is a thick foaming spray that clings to taps, fittings and washroom surfaces to remove limescale. That makes it well suited to vertical areas like shower walls and fixtures.

Odour in toilets, urinals and floors

Changing room odour usually has two sources: urinals and the floors and benches around them. Fragrance hides both for an hour or so, then the smell returns.

For urinals, URIZAP Shock clears uric build-up and odour in under a week. So starting in mid-December gives a clean baseline before the new year. URIZAP Daily then keeps it that way through January.

For floors, benches and other hard surfaces, the Multi-Purpose Cleaner uses probiotic technology. It breaks down grime and odour at the source and carries on working after cleaning. You can use it for both spray cleaning and wet mopping.

A December reset, not a January firefight

The gyms that come through January well don’t scramble when the problems show. Instead, they use December’s quieter weeks to clear drains, remove mould and scale, and reset urinals. Then they maintain those results through the rush.
